Welcome to the Swedish Basenji Specialty 2023
in Degeberga, South Scania

Joakim Ohlsson – Kennel Hackensack, Sweden

I grew up surrounded by animals of all kinds, from chicken and dogs to rabbits and goats. My father was a Scottish terrier breeder, and I went to shows from an early age.

Later studies and external circumstances limited my commitment to dogs until 1989, when it was possible for me to have dogs again – and I completely fell for the Cavalier King Charles spaniel.

Since then I have bred Cavaliers with great success under the prefix HACKENSACK and have been Sweden's most successful breeder 1999-2011.

Since a few years back I have stopped breeding because it became harder and harder to combine it with my interest in judging and training in new breeds.

I have been a judge since 2002 and really enjoy using the knowledge I have gained during my years as a breeder, and exhibitor, in the ring as a judge. I am very careful about how I further educate myself as a judge and choose breeds with great care. A and O is that I should be attracted to the breed. This has of course led to my racial group affiliation being a bit scattered, BUT I really like the breeds that I hold authorization for. I am not a "quick-trained" judge, would rather have the opportunity to judge new breeds and learn a little more before moving on.

Basenji is for me a very attractive breed both in standing and walking. After a review of the breed at the judges' association's monthly meeting, I felt interested in starting my education on the breed.

I thank you for inviting you to judge on your unofficial colour special (curiosities; for about ten years I arranged a color-divided special for Cavaliers so I know how appreciated it is to let the colours compete separately) and look forward to seeing you there later this summer :-)
